what are dental implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants offers a permanent solution for missing teeth. Dental implants is a small screw made from biocompatible materials, such as titanium or zirconia, that is inserted into the jawbone during the implant surgery. This is a main component of the dental implant system.

Once the implant post is securely integrated into the jawbone, two final parts are added to complete the restoration. First, the abutment is attached—this small connector sits on the implant and extends just above the gum line. Finally, the custom-made restoration (the new tooth, crown, or bridge) is secured to the abutment, completing the implant and restoring your natural chewing function and aesthetic appearance.

Our Dental Implant Procedure

Moorooka Dental Care provides a complete solution for all your implant needs in one location. Your dental implant procedure performed by our in-house implant experts like Implant Dentists (implantologists), Oral Surgeons, Periodontists or Prosthodontists and generally requires multiple visits. A quality dental implant procedure involves several steps, including an initial consultation, preparation and planning, surgery and placement of implants, healing, integration, as well as restoration and final placement.

FREE Consultation and Assessment

The first step is a free initial consultation. During this appointment, we will discuss your overall health and take a detailed examination of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, and jawbone. We will also take an OPG x-ray. Based on the results, we will decide if you are a eligible candidate for dental implant treatment or not. If you are eligible, we will create a detail treatment plan that include the type of implant you need, material selection, a complete process time, cost and payment options.

Dental Implant Placement

Once your treatment plan is finalized, we will schedule your appointment for the placement of your dental implant. We perform this surgical procedure in our clinic using local anesthesia. If you feel anxious, optional sedation options are also available.

We start by carefully opening your gums to see your jawbone. Using your 3D x-rays, we carefully create a small space for implant in the bone with special drills. We then carefully place the titanium implant directly into that space. We craft your implant in a way that naturally fuse with your jawbone. In a few months it’s creating a foundation for your new teeth. After that, we close the gums over the implant for healing.

Healing and Osseointegration

After implant placement, a healing process is begins. It’s known as osseointegration. It’s when the titanium implant connects with the bone for a strong fit. osseointegration phase is important for the long term success of your dental implant.

Osseointegration takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months, this can depending on individual healing capabilities, bone density, and the specific type of implant used. We also provide temporary solutions (if needed) to maintain your aesthetics and chewing function. These might include a temporary denture or a temporary bridge. We will schedule check up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure that osseointegration is progressing as expected. We advice to maintain the oral hygiene during this phase to prevent infection.

Abutment Placement

Once your implant has fully healed and bonded with your jawbone, the next step is the placement of the abutment. The abutment is the connector between the tooth implant and the artificial tooth. After the abutment is placed, your gums will need a few weeks to heal around it before we can process to next step.

Final Restoration

We take impressions of your mouth, including the abutment and nearby teeth. These are sent to our in house digital dental lab with your measurements and shade details. Our team then makes a crown that matches the colour, shape, and size of your natural teeth.

Once your restoration is ready, you have to visit to our clinic for a trial fitting. We check the fit, bite, and appearance, and make adjustments if required accordinig to your comfort.

After this, the restoration is permanently attached to the abutment. This may be done with dental cement or a screw, depending on the restoration type and your clinical needs. We make sure the new tooth feels comfortable and works like a natural teeth.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

Just like natural teeth, your new implants require regular care and check-ups. We schedule follow up appointments which help you to maintain your oral health and longevity of your dental implants.
