What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency refers to a sudden and unforeseen dental issue that requires immediate attention to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, or address a critical oral health concern.
These emergencies can encompass a range of situations, such as severe toothaches, broken or knocked-out teeth, oral infections, abscesses, bleeding, and injuries to the mouth or jaw.
How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies
Navigating through unexpected dental emergencies requires quick and informed actions. Here, we will provide concise guidance on how to effectively manage common dental emergencies.
Severe Pain
If you are experiencing severe pain, take over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen or Panadol as directed on the packaging to manage the pain.
Knocked-Out Tooth
If a tooth has been completely knocked out, time is of the essence. Try to find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If the root is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or water. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue. If possible, place the tooth back in the socket and hold it in place with a clean piece of gauze or a handkerchief. If that isn’t possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk or water, check out Root Canal Treatments for more.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
If you have a broken piece or chipped tooth, try to find the pieces and bring them with you to the dentist. In the meantime, you can take Ibuprofen for the pain and rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms around the tooth. Infection usually causes it. If you have an abscess, you’ll need to see a dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can take Ibuprofen for the pain and rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the third molars, and they usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. They can cause dental problems if they don’t come incorrectly or if there isn’t enough emergency room in the mouth for them. If you’re having problems with your wisdom teeth, you should see a dentist.
Crown Came Off
If your dental crown comes off, try to put it back in place with toothpaste or denture adhesive. If that doesn’t work, bring the crown with you to the dentist so that it can be re-cemented.
