What Are Fake Teeth Called?
Dentures, or false teeth, serve as prosthetic replacements for missing teeth. These devices are made from acrylic, nylon, or metal to fit securely over the gums, whether you’re replacing one tooth, several, or a full set.
Well-fitted dentures offer multiple advantages, helping you speak clearly, chew easily and boost your self-esteem. They also help prevent facial sagging, safeguard your remaining natural teeth, and improve your overall dental health.

How Much Do False Teeth Cost?
The cost of dentures or false teeth depends on the type of dental prosthetic you choose. Full dentures range from $2,500 to $4,500 per jaw, while dental implants can cost anywhere from $3,999 to $7,000 per single implant. Partial dentures are usually more affordable, priced between $700 and $1,700.
Here’s a breakdown of the approximate costs for different types of false teeth in Australia:
Type of False Teeth | Cost in Australia (starting from) |
Full Dentures | $2,500 per jaw |
Implant-Retained Dentures | $15,000 per jaw |
Partial Dentures | $700 |
Single Tooth Denture | $500 |
Please note that these prices are estimates and can vary based on individual needs, materials used, and specific dental conditions. Additionally, if you don’t have private health insurance, it’s crucial to understand that the Australian Government doesn’t subsidise the costs of false teeth. So, thoroughly research your options and ask your dentist for a detailed breakdown of fees before proceeding with any treatment plan. At Moorooka Dental Care, we strive to provide transparent pricing and personalised solutions to meet your dental needs. Who is a Candidate for Removable False Teeth or Dentures?
If you have missing teeth or have extensive tooth decay or damage, you might be a candidate for removable false teeth or dentures. These dental prosthetics are custom-made to fit snugly within your mouth, providing a comfortable and natural-looking replacement for your missing teeth.
Dentures solve a range of issues related to tooth loss, including difficulties with chewing and speaking, as well as self-consciousness about appearance. They restore proper chewing function, allowing you to enjoy a varied diet without discomfort or limitations. Dentures also help maintain the structure of your face by supporting facial muscles and preventing sagging, which can occur with tooth loss.
What Are the Different Types of Dentures?
There are various types of dentures available:
- full dentures β replace all your upper or lower teeth, or both
- partial dentures β replace some teeth and use metal clasps that clip onto your remaining teeth
- implant-retained dentures β replace a full arch of missing teeth, and are supported by implants in your jawbone; they can be removed when needed.
No matter which dentures you choose, you will have to go through a fitting process so that your false teeth match the rest of your teethβs shape, colour and size. Below is a table that details each kind of denture and when it’s appropriate to fit which type.
Type of Denture | Description | Cost Range | Lifespan | Maintenance |
Partial Dentures | Used when some healthy teeth remain; clipped around existing teeth. Clips may be visible but can be tooth-coloured. | $700 to $8,000 | Β± 5 years | Clean daily using recommended solution and brush. Handle with care to avoid damage and store properly to prevent drying out. |
Full Dentures | Used when all teeth are missing; attached to a plate resting against gums. Plates made from metal or gum-coloured acrylic, not visible to others. | $300 to $8,000 | Β± 5 years | Clean daily with recommended solution and brush. Handle with care and store properly to avoid damage and drying out. |
Removable Dentures | Traditional model, easier to clean, but may slip out more easily. | $300 to $8,000 | Β± 5 years | Clean daily using recommended solution and brush. Handle with care, avoid damaging clips, and store properly to prevent drying out. |
Flexible Dentures | Made with flexible and durable materials, more comfortable and lightweight. No visible clips. | $700 to $3,000 | Β± 5 to 8 years | Clean daily with recommended solution and brush. Handle with care to avoid damage. |
For maintenance, it’s essential to clean your dentures daily using your dentistβs recommended solution and toothbrush. If removable, soak them overnight in a solution or water and rinse before reinserting. Follow your dentist’s guidance for cleaning based on the type of denture you have.
What Are False Teeth Made From?
False teeth are usually made from plastic, specifically acrylic resin, although porcelain dentures are also available. Porcelain dentures are more expensive, and have a longer lifespan and a more natural aesthetic. However, acrylic dentures are not as prone to cracks and chips because the acrylic sticks better to the denture base and is easier to adjust. Acrylic dentures can also be quieter and feel more natural when chewing.

False Teeth FAQs
Is it painful to get false teeth?
Getting false teeth or dentures can cause some discomfort at first as your mouth adjusts to the new prosthetic. You may experience soreness, irritation, and difficulty eating or speaking for a short period. However, any pain should be manageable and typically subsides as you become accustomed to wearing dentures. A little discomfort is common during the adjustment period, but you should report severe pain or persistent issues to your dentist.
Can I eat after getting dentures?
Yes, you can eat after getting dentures. You should start with soft foods and gradually introduce harder foods as you become more comfortable with your dentures. Avoid very sticky or hard foods that could dislodge or damage your dentures. It’s important to follow your dentist’s guidance on diet and oral care.
Can you permanently attach dentures?
Yes, advancements like permanent implant-supported dentures work similarly to permanent fake teeth or permanent artificial teeth. These dentures are securely attached to dental implants that are surgically placed in the jawbone, offering a more permanent solution.

The dentist was outstanding. She was so gentle I felt almost no pain after the initial local was administered. Probably the best dentist I have been to. She was also very fair about pricing and substantially cheaper than the dentist I had previously seen in the CBD. Outstanding service.

βFalse Teeth: Costs & Optionsβ
I have not been to the dentist in years and only went today as it was an emergency. I went to Moorooka Dental Care because a few people had recommended it. All I have to say is that for someone that gets very anxious, I was put at ease even before I sat in the chair. It started from the Receptionist, Fatimata, to Ahmed (owner), to Dentist (Reza), to his dental assistant (Raeesa). They were all so amazing and Reza was so gentle and caring and explained every step. I was very comfortable. I will definately be going back, will take my son there from now on and tell all my family and friends about this place. Customer service is top notch! Thank you to all of you I met and those im yet to meet.
