Annerley was once thought to be a run-down area in need of “facelifting.” The good news is that many Queenslanders have been restored as a result of gentrification, giving the neighbourhood an uplifting, eclectic feel. Aside from the social housing, the suburb has a lot of heritage-listed places, which some people are unaware of.
During World War II, the United States of America used Queensland as a support base for the Pacific War, and Brisbane, as the state’s largest city, saw a large influx of visitors. After that, the Brisbane City Council took over the job of building air raid shelters, and this one in Annerley, QLD is one of the few that have survived out of the 17 that were erected in Brisbane.

The Annerley Lifestyle
Annerley is a small town with a lot of character that is close to the metropolis (but not the mayhem). Op-shops are still popular, but they’re now populated by antique collectors rather than bargain hunters. Greasy spoons and takeaways have been replaced with restaurants and coffee shops (although you can still find a fast greasy meal if you are in need).
Demographics
In the 2011 census, Annerley recorded a population of 10,664 people, 50.2% female and 49.8% male.[19] The median age of the Annerley, QLD 4103 population was 32 years, 5 years below the national median of 37.[19] 62.1% of people living in Annerley were born in Australia, compared to the national average of 69.8%; the next most common countries of birth were India 3.6%, New Zealand 3.5%, England 3%, China 1.6%, Vietnam 1.5%.[19] 70.1% of people spoke only English at home; the next most popular languages were 2.2% Mandarin, 2% Greek, 1.8% Vietnamese, 1.2% Malayalam, 1.2% Cantonese.[19]
Annerley, QLD History
The area was originally used for dairy farms. One of the first residential subdivisions was the “St Kilda Estate” bounded by Cornwall Street to the north, Boggo Road (now Annerley Road) to the west and Ipswich Road to the south.[6] In 1866, the Junction Hotel was opened on the triangular corner of Ipswich Road and Boggo Road (now Annerley Road).[7]
Post office
Around 1880 a postal receiving office was opened at Boggo, which became Boggo Post Office on 1 May 1882. There was a proposal to rename it Richmond Post Office but this was rejected owing to the potential for confusion with Richmond, North Queensland and Richmond, New South Wales and new alternative names were sought. At this point it is believed that Digby Denham, then a member of the Stephens Divisional Board (and later a Premier of Queensland), proposed to call it Annerley after the township variously spelled Annerley, Annerly or Anerly in Surrey, England.[4][8][9] The post office was renamed Annerley Post Office in November 1892.[10][11][12][13]
Local government
On 14 October 1886, following a successful petition from ratepayers to create a new division, Stephens Division was severed from subdivision No. 1 of Yeerongpilly Division. In 1903 it became the Shire of Stephens. Annerley was the seat of the Shire of Stephens. The shire offices were located on Ipswich Road between Victoria Terrace and Junction Terrace (27.5069°S 153.0347°E). After the shire became part of the City of Brisbane in 1925, the land was sold and the offices relocated on the block to become a residence at 15 Ealing Street (27.5070°S 153.0351°E).[14][15]Annerley Library
Annerley Library
The Annerley public library was opened in 1957 at 448 Ipswich Road.[16] It was designed in 1956 by architect James Birrell and is listed on the Brisbane Heritage Register.[17]

Being a previous resident myself and selling homes in Annerley since 1993 following on from a decade long career at Annerley CBA, I am very familiar with the area.
Only 5km from the Brisbane CBD, Annerley is an inner-city locale where its residents are still afforded a peaceful suburban lifestyle. With an eclectic mix of beautiful Queenslanders, Colonials, post-war and grand modern homes, the area offers many opportunities for growth and renovation.

We absolutely love living in Annerley. It was not an area we had previously considered because of distance from family but it is so convenient to everything. We can access Indooroopilly, Carindale and Garden City shopping centre in 15 minutes. We can access the city in 10 minutes and have excellent public transport. We are very close to the PA Hospital and the Mater and so many health/medical professionals are moving into the area. Although Ipswich Road runs through the suburb, we live on the Tarragindi side and it is very quiet, leafy and green with great parks. Annerley has a vintage/handmade vibe that is developing even more.
