Salisbury, QLD History

Salisbury, was named after the residence of William Coote, an early Brisbane engineer, architect, journalist and political figure, who lived in the area. It is presumed to refer to Salisbury in England.[3][5][6]

The Beenleigh railway line opened in 1885 which included the Salisbury railway station to service the area.[7]

Rocklea started to develop before Salisbury, with the Logan Railway estate auctioned on 2 May 1885, advertising that the estate was near Salisbury railway station.[8][9]

On 20 July 1912, The main Salisbury Township Estate, Salisbury located off Main Road (now known as Lilian Avenue) was advertised to be sold on-site, by Arthur Blackwood. The estate consisted of 442 predominantly 32 perch (800m2) blocks, consisting of the entire area between Lillian Ave, Cripps Street, Fairlie Terrace and Rocky Water Holes.[10]

On 23 November 1918, Mountain View Estate, Salisbury located off Main Road (now known as Lilian Avenue) was advertised to be auctioned at 3 o’clock on-site, by auctioneer A. S. Phillips & Sons Ltd. The estate consisted of 26 half-acre allotments and four two-acre blocks. The allotments were advertised as situated on a high position between Salisbury and Coopers Plains railway stations and opposite the site purchased by the Queensland Government for the proposed State School.[11][12]

Salisbury State School opened on 27 May 1920.[13]

The School Estate Salisbury was advertised for auction on Saturday 14 May 1921. 75 residential sites were sold by Cameron Brothers next to Salisbury State School and within 10 minute walk to Salisbury Railway station.[14][15]

Is Salisbury A Good Suburb To Live?

Salisbury tucked away on Brisbane’s southside, is a tranquil and beautiful corner of the city. Despite being surrounded by major roadways, it provides a great deal of peace and quiet, with a quick commute to the highway. The 120, 124, and 125 buses run every 15 minutes on weekdays, providing good public transportation alternatives. A well-equipped train station is also nearby.

Salisbury locals just have to leave their home grounds for a big weekend full of excitement thanks to the Rocklea markets, Ballistic Beer Co, The Salisbury Hotel, and Toohey Forest.

Salisbury is located between the bustling Moorooka and the up-and-coming Coopers Plains and is only 10-12 kilometres and 15-20 minutes away from the city during non-peak hours.

To know if Salisbury is the right suburb for you, we have collected some reviews from current and past residents:

“Friendly Salisbury” reviewed by Collins H.

We have recently moved into the area and are loving it. There is a lovely neighbourhood spirit where everyone says hi and there are always lots of people going for walks with children and/or dogs.. The group of shops includes a cafe, a very well stocked convenience store, fish and chip shop, a gym, a bakery, barber, doctors, a nail shop, a second hand book shop. The bowls club is across the road and a park for the kids. BCC Tennis courts at the school can be hired as well. Across the creek there is a basketball hoop and some gym equipment. There is a mix of older homes, newer homes and lots of new houses being built.
I think Salisbury is a lovely neighbourhood!

“Salisbury is Brisbane’s most liveable suburb” reviewed by Tania

Salisbury is awesome, I love it. I have lived here for 15 years and will be here for many, many more. Great schools, parks, shops, services, public transport and emerging cafe culture. Great neighbourhood spirit.

“Great suburb, regret moving out!” reviewed by Matthew

Recently moved from Salisbury, QLD 5108 to Wynnum West and greatly regret it.

Salisbury is quiet, clean with a great neighbourly spirit. Really underappreciated cafes and restaurants.

Pity about the troll accounts on here, seems to be people jealous of Salisbury and just trying to increase the ranking of their own suburbs.
